Who invented the Muscle Car?
During the 1960’s and ceasing production during the start of the 1970's, a unique type of American automobile appeared on the scene , and almost instantaneously became widely sought after , particularly with sports car enthusiasts , before disappearing rapidly from demand to become a sought after Classic – This was the age of ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars were called this because of their extremely large and powerful performance motors and ridiculously quick acceleration.
The majority of these muscle cars were constructed with V8 engines generating over 300 to 400 brake horse power and consequently were always very expensive and costly to maintain .
Muscle cars were built with high performance engine parts such as specialist multiple valves , overhead cams , intake manifolds advanced carburettors and free flowing exhausts that helped to generate greater engine power and due to this – higher car insurance premiums
Specialist sports cars manufactured before The 1960's were unremarkably the heavy prestige motors fitted with the makers developed engine available .
The exception to the rule was the Corvette , Built in 1953 it was America's first sports car as such . By the end of 1962 the Chevrolet Corvette was fitted with a large V8 327 hp engine and became the first of the class of two seater US Muscle cars, replacing the much heavier models .
When Ford Mustang was manufactured in 1964 other car builders were soon to follow and hence a lot of the muscle car market being dominated by lightweight autos sports cars fitted with big V8 engines which became known as ‘Pony Cars’, although there were many exceptions as older models such as the Ford Thunderbird were upgraded with larger more powerful engines .
The last Muscle Car was manufactured in the 1970's with the Global oil crisis and gasolene rationing , which coupled with the high cost of insurance and the start of exhaust emission controls , led to a a lack of demand and the cars faded into history to become one of the greatest American Classics ever manufactured .
