Now That Spring Has Finally Arrived, There Are Many Opportunities To Head Outside And Make The Most Of The Sunshine
At last it appears that spring is just around the corner, and following a couple of days of heavy frost and freezing evenings, today the sun is shining and the sky is free of clouds. Even though there are a multitude of things to do indoors, the opportunity to feel the warm sunlight has proved to be a big distraction and I’ve just been out walking for a while.
Even though I live in a reasonably big village, it’s always peaceful during the day, and once across the main road in front of my house I am immediately on a footpath leading over the fields. There is a little incline initially and once I’ve walked over that there is virtually no human sound in evidence at all.
This track is my favoured local walk. Over the first field, dipping down to cross a single track back lane, and then another gentle slope over a second field which ends up at a small wood on the summit of the hillock. The woods are private property, but the owners allow the villagers to make use of them by providing stiles to get over the fence, marked pathways and occasional benches for the rambler who wishes to take a brief rest.
In the summer, the trees are thick with greenery, and squirrels and birds are all over the place. Many of the trees in the wood are sweet chestnuts and when we reach autumn the ground is a carpet of crushed fruits. But spring is only just beginning and at the moment the branches are bare and the woodland creatures are silent apart from a few distant birds singing.
On this occasion I have another reason for wishing to go to the woods. A buddy and I have offered to make a video to accompany an acoustic song recorded by a friend. We have a concept, but have had to wait for the right day to get some video footage and today is the first day on which the weather has been good enough to film outdoors.
Sadly, my friend is away from the area at the moment, so I need to employ my video abilities. Filming the footage is difficult because I have defective sight, so I need to wear my glasses to operate the video equipment, but don’t need them to look into the distance to be able to see what I’m videoing. It’s really quite frustrating! On occasions I ponder whether I should ask about Laser eye surgery, but I really don’t know if Laser eye treatment is appropriate for whatever is wrong with my eyes, and anyway, I believe it’s quite expensive.
In any case, I have stuck at it and hopefully have plenty of film for us to start creating the video. I have videoed the sun’s rays peeping through the trees, the path twisting through the woods, the empty sweep of the fields heading towards the marshes and the river some distance away, and the huge cargo ships slowly finding their way along the river to offload their containers further upstream (though the last bit isn’t for our project!).
Luckily, my friend has very good eyesight, so when we get to the intricate business of putting all the film together with the interior footage we already have, she will get on with the majority of the work and will leave me and my defective vision to view and comment on rough cuts, and edit the audio if and when necessary. Fortunately, my ears more than compensate for my eyes, and I have very good hearing plus a excellent musical ear. Perhaps I should steer clear of the idea of Laser eye surgery just in case my hearing worsens when it’s done so that my eyes and ears are back on level ground!
In any case, the video will eventually be created and uploaded to various websites, and hopefully people will like it. It would be great to get some positive feedback and maybe have the option to collaborate with the same artists again. Maybe we could really make some money from it, and then I could afford to think about the concept of Laser eye treatment, so that I can film for future projects without the constant need to take my glasses on and off countless times.
