What was the difference between Pony and Muscle Cars?
During the Nineteen Sixties and ceasing production during the beginning of the 1970's, a unique type of American automobile appeared on the scene , and almost instantly became extremely desirable , particularly with younger drivers , before disappearing rapidly from demand to become a modern day classic – This was the so called ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars were called this due to their extremely large and powerful engines and blazingly quick acceleration.
Many of these muscle cars had V8 engines generating over 300 to 400 brake horse power and thus were without doubt very expensive and costly to maintain .
Muscle cars usedhigh performance engine parts such as specialist multiple valves , overhead cams , intake manifolds advanced carburettors and free flowing exhausts that helped to generate greater engine power and consequently – higher car insurance premiums
American sports cars manufactured before 1960 were unremarkably the bulky and cumbersome prestige motors fitted with the manufacturers developed engine available .
The exclusion to this was the Corvette , Built in 1953 it was America's first sports car as such . During 1962 the Chevrolet Corvette was fitted with a large V8 327 hp engine and became the first of the class of two seater American Muscle cars, replacing the much heavier models .
With the success of the Ford Mustang manufactured in 1964 other car manufacturers were soon to follow and led to most of the muscle car market becoming controlled by small autos cars fitted with big V8 engines which went under the less powerful name of ‘Pony Cars’, although many of the older classics such as the Ford Thunderbird were upgraded with larger more powerful engines .
The Muscle car period ended in the 1970's with the oil crisis and gasolene rationing , which when combined with high insurance and the start of exhaust emission controls , led to a downgrade of some engines and the Muscle Car passed into history as some of the greatest American Sports Cars ever manufactured .
